Keep The Opus Alive

Mr. Holland’s Opus, one of my favorite Richard Dreyfuss movies, came out in 1995. It’s the compelling story of an ordinary high school music teacher that had a dream of writing a famous symphony. Year after year he would work on it but life just kept getting in the way. As the years went by doubt and frustration crept in. He wondered if it had only been a fantasy, or if he really had the talent. Years passed quickly. He began to feel like a failure and a loser.

What he didn’t realize was that all the pain and doubt and frustration that came with the circumstances of life, were the very ingredients he needed to craft his music. And in the end, when his symphony was completed late in life, it “brought the house down.”

His music had to be incubated in the adversities of life. And when it was time to deliver his Opus, unimaginable beauty emerged through his music. So much so that lives were changed. His music ignited hope in people whose  dreams had been put on hold.

Where are you in this story? We are all somewhere on the journey. Keep dreaming, keep hoping, keep the Opus alive. I get it, mine took 22 years. See the link below for my latest book, “Raising greatness.” It was incubated in the adversities of life…
