The Sweet Spot In Time
11 years have passed since I penned this. I hope it gives you a boost today.
Last night I took a stroll beneath the stars at the Links of Utopia. The fingernail moon set early like a red spoon on the western horizon chased by Orion and his belt and sword this night. I paused to wonder at the great expanse and to thank God for the moment of grace in a world anemic from a lack of deep contemplation. It was very dark and the stars like pin holes to heaven gave the only light. And then it hit me. I was standing within a few feet of the very place God told me to write the book years ago. Little did I know at the time that this book would become a movie.
So much has happened since that day... Tonight as I reflect, all the pieces begin to converge around two words: sweet spot. I learned that afternoon years ago that the truth is found in the sweet spot when hitting a golf shot, not how manicured or pristine the golf course grass is. It was not about technology or swing vectors. Not about the aerodynamics of the golf ball or launch angle. A culled range ball, a worn-out astroturf mat placed in the middle of a patch of weeds, a plowed cow pasture for a driving range along with a club design passed its prime... and I swung and found the sweet spot. And in that moment, that was all that mattered. I remembered looking around at the simplicity of the scene, the irony of the cemetery a stone's throw away, and hearing the voice of God say, “This is the spot, write the book.” I missed it then but get it tonight. When He said “spot” He was referring to a sweet spot in time.
Last night I paused, I contemplated, and I remembered that defining moment in my life. The movie was shot right here and it was the cemetery scene next to the range where Johnny (Robert Duvall) shared with Luke the secret to a sweet spot in time. As I peered through the darkness I could see the silhouette of the great arms of the Oaks in the cemetery reaching to heaven. And then the leaves rustled ever so slightly in the cool night breeze as if to whisper Johnny’s secret to me... “See His face, Feel His presence, Trust His love.”
