Audience of One

“I became the talk of the club, the kid who couldn’t miss. I became somebody. I thrived on this attention. I didn’t realize it then, but I had traded unconditional love from my dog to a life of conditional acceptance based on my performance.”

- Seven Days in Utopia, p. 26-27

This is the story of many of us. At some point in life, attention and accolades began to pour over us as we succeeded and improved. Of course, success and improvement aren’t the enemy at all. We are called to that. The culprit is that we tie our identity to that. When that happens fear begins to creep in and in some cases sweeps in like a mighty river stifling our journey. The fear of failure always dogs us if we misappropriate our identity. Always keep a good and true definition of who you are somewhere nearby. I have always liked this saying, it may be old and common, but it is my go to: “Play to an audience of One… The God who gifted you, called you to the field of performance, and who has a deeper destiny for you that goes beyond success.”

“I thank you, God, for making me so mysteriously complex! Everything you do is marvelously breathtaking. It simply amazes me to think about it! How thoroughly you know me, Lord!”

- Psalm 139: 14
