Rhythm, Balance, and Patience

“My method is to swing in rhythm, stay balanced, and be patient at the top of my backswing… and maintain a sense of freedom throughout the swing.”

- Seven Days In Utopia, pg. 46

As we head into “Master’s” week, I was thinking back to the man who instilled the love of golf in my life many years ago. As a young aspiring golfer, my teacher/mentor, Johnny Arreaga, started most of my golf lessons with these three words: Rhythm, Balance, and Patience. I would hit 5 shots thinking about each word by itself and then 5 thinking about all three. Usually, by the end of that, my golf swing was fine. Johnny would just smile and leave me to focus on what had just happened. These became my foundational words for golf. These same words will likely define the new Master’s champion next weekend.

Before long I realized that these were important foundational words for my life as well. Worry and stress could easily steal my rhythm, perfectionism could undermine balance, and being obsessed with immediate gratification competed ferociously against patience.

How are you doing today with these three words? Breathe deep, and don’t miss the joy of spring, the loves of your life, and the moments that give you a glimpse of eternity. Rhythm, Balance, and Patience… watch for these at the Master’s.

"Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?"
