Adapters Win
One of the most important principles I have learned in my profession is that the human brain isn’t wired for perfection. Instead it is wired for adapting. Understanding that can change the way we see and respond to the world. The Open Championship is this week in England. The heat wave over there has literally burned up the grass. It is baked. Totally the opposite from the perfectly green and manicured courses usually played on the PGA Tour.
Be observing the creative adapting abilities of the players. In the end, those that are adapters will rise to the occasion. And the winner will be the consummate adapter. Those chasing the elusive perfect swing will get an early ticket home.
It’s the same with us. We can wake up hoping for a perfect day that never materializes. That leads to stress and frustration. Or, we can wake up anticipation a new day of adapting, knowing that it was the Lord that created our brains for whatever the day brings. The Bible says, “This is the day the Lord has made, be glad and rejoice in it.” And it says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Whatever your day brings, let go of being perfect, and embrace being an adapter. Watch the Open Championship, and notice as the adapters rise to the occasion in such unusual and unpredictable circumstances. Good lessons will be on full display.
