Ornament Treasures

Gracious, the memories are back. They were ushered in with the fragrance of a fresh cut Noble Fir. The lights were strung with the anticipation of our annual memory pilgrimage.

It’s been a tradition that every ornament hung on our tree has a memory moment attached to it. And once again, the Saturday after Thanksgiving tugged on our heartstrings as we carefully hung some of our most cherished treasures.

The ornaments traced our 44 years of marriage. We started in Waco, followed by Charlottesville where I entered grad school. Our first job was a professorship at KU for 12 years in Lawrence where our first girl was born. Next we gave up tenure to chase our dreams as a Sport Psychologist entrepreneur and moved to Fort Worth where our second girl was born. Then off to San Antonio to consult with the San Antonio Spurs for 8 years and where we started our ministry. Then Utopia, Golden, Colorado, Fredericksburg, Texas, Utopia again, San Antonio, Waco, Fort Worth again, Vail, and now Horseshoe Bay, Texas.

While most of our belongings changed, our ornaments gained in numbers through each stop and memory along the way.

Our tree each Christmas is a grounding. It’s a foundational symbol of the favor of our Father during our great adventure. While we are dreamers at heart, these ornaments remind us of the many dreams that came true… and they keep our dreaming spirit alive.

God called for calendar celebrations throughout the Bible. He knew that memory celebrations were essential for our hearts—reminders of His faithfulness through all of the joys and heartaches of this sacred journey.

And so we celebrate this Christmas, remembering the birth of Jesus as our greatest gift, the one that made all of these possible. May this Christmas ignite your memories and dreams. We are thankful for each of you. Until next time…
