Change

Change has been a theme for me this week. Sometimes change rushes in and catches us by surprise. Sometimes it’s inevitable but comes slower. What is most important is to stay close to the Holy Spirit so that you are able to see on a different plane, a view from a Spiritual vantage point. 

This week I witnessed what looked like a jarring and out of the blue change experience for a friend of mine. One day this particular individual  was climbing the ladder of an amazing opportunity. Then suddenly the following day at the whim of another individual, the journey ended… abruptly. Over, done. Shocking. 

What was inspiring in all of this, my friend grabbed hold of the Spirit and believes that God actually has a better plan. Though the new path at the fork in the road hasn’t been illuminated, they feel more alive than ever. They are trusting God and feel extraordinary peace and freedom today. Instead of fear and hopelessness they feel invigorated and excited.

My friend chose to believe that a change that dramatic and unpredictable could only have been orchestrated by their faithful Father in heaven. I am inspired by my friend’s courage and outlook and celebrate with them as they walk this out in joy and freedom. Truly inspiring. 

Karen and I walked away from a tenured position at KU in 1996. People couldn’t wrap their minds around it. We gave up a steady paycheck for a non contract life and a heart full of joy and adventure. If that change wouldn’t have happened, there would be no book written and movie made, no ministry, no San Antonio Spurs and Baylor University Championship rings among so many other things. God said it was time and we left quickly for His next summit and then the next and the next. 

I’m sitting on my front porch in Montana thanking God for His involvement in all the dramatic changes in our lives that have led to the greatest adventures imaginable. One of those is a cabin in Montana. Stay strong and embrace the adventure.

I wrote this to encourage you. Don’t be surprised by change. Stay close to the Spirit and listen carefully to the Voice that speaks from a different vantage point. As my dear friend Joe Coors once told me and Karen as we embarked on the movie, “If what you are called to seems crazy… it must be God.”
