I’m Fine, How about You?
Seven men, friends for life, lovers of golf, Jesus and a good steak, meeting in Montana to share a Holy Spirit time out of time adventure. That happened last weekend. Golf is a convenient excuse for gathering.
Last year was an epic trip that included Castle Pines, The Valley Club in Santa Barbara, and Monterey Peninsula CC. This year included the top courses in Montana. My new summer venue, The Wilderness Club in Eureka, Stock Farm Golf Club in Hamilton, and Iron Horse in Whitefish.
What you never heard between these guys was, “How are you? I’m fine, how are you?” That ended between most of us years ago, even though the attendees change here and there.
These are below the surface men on a below the surface destination to freedom. From what, you might ask because on the surface these guys are some of the most accomplished, successful, respected, talented, individuals in their professions. They are Jesus followers, philanthropic to the core, and world changers. But like King David, “a man after God’s own heart”, their stories are full of unseen heartache, tragedy, and pitfalls.
Only by the grace of God were they gathered around our fireplace on a cold Montana morning last Sunday sharing the truth. The true story. The stories of overcoming failure, family disfunction, alcohol and or drug abuse, failed or struggling marriages, tragic loss of family members, hostile takeovers and crooked partners, loneliness, un-fulfillment, depression, and fear of failing to mention just a few.
The Bible says, “They shall overcome by the blood of the lamb and the testimonies of men.” The problem seems to be a venue for sharing testimonies. Everyone has a story, there just aren’t many places that are safe for sharing. And there doesn’t seem to be many willing to listen.
Well, on these gatherings, the power of testimony overwhelms the enemy’s ploy to identify us by that list above. The Holy Spirit shatters the lie and each man receives deep freedom from Jesus through the courageous testimonies of each man. It is supernatural.
The love and inspiration shared between these men was once again life giving. I pray that each of you has such an experience like this in your life soon. You aren’t alone. Ask the Holy Spirit to open that door of deep friendships for you. Until next time…
